WOF: True Treasure
Pastor, singer, songwriter Donnie McClurkin, recorded the song entitled, “All I Ever Really Wanted Was You.” The writer states that he thought he wanted money and fame, but when he received them they didn’t satisfy him at all. At the end of the journey he recognizes that all he ever wanted could only be found in God. Often times we search the world over - trying to find our true treasure – the thing we value the most, or thing that gives us the most satisfaction, only to live lives of dissatisfaction, when the truest treasure is right before us – in the reality of knowing that everything we have, everything we are and ever hope to be is in God. What a joy!
In the tenth chapter of the book of Mark, in verses 17 – 22 we find the story of a wealthy young man who approaches Jesus Christ with the question: “What shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” The question sounds like an earnest quest for what might truly satisfy the young man’s deepest desire. However, the young man approached Jesus with a false sense of humility and religiosity. Jesus the Christ quickly recognizes this pretense. As he questions why the man would call him a name that should only be reserved for God, Jesus indicates to him, and those that witness this discussion, that this young man’s allegiance is to someone or something other than the God of the Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We see a hint here, despite what is coming from the young man’s lips, that he is already clinging to what he believes is his true treasure.
Saints many of us come before the presence of God in much the same way as this young man did. We throw ourselves down on the floor in a false humility before “Our God,” and we ask God what must be done, as if his Word, his standard for our lives is going to change. God is going to require us to be holy as God is holy anymore. God is going to expect us to love as God is Love. Our God isn’t going to expect of us to let the light of Jesus so shine through us that people will see our good works and glorify our God in Heaven.Matt. 5:16 So we smile on cue, we sing on cue, we wave our hands on cue, we shout hallelujah on cue, we go through our religious motions, but when we leave the fellowship of our church services, we leave defeated, broken, busted, and disgusted, because we weren’t even real enough to seek God for true change, and for true relationship.
It may seem easy to pretend with others, because we think people can’t see our heart, but God knows our heart! Further the Bible says (Matt. 12:34) that out of the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks, so sooner or later people are going to get to know who you really are - if they even care. What is your true treasure? Is it money, cars, houses? Is it temporary relationships with those others who are not like minded, because you don’t have the internal resources to commit to long term covenant relationship? How does that translate in how you live, and move and have your being in God? In the Kingdom of God? Join us as we continue this discussion right here at FaithWorks Christian Center.
